Chapter Twelve

LACHLAN

“Mr. Daly, I can help you over here.” Shawna waves me over.

I feel a tug on my hand. Hope looks up at me with a sweet smile. “Lachlan, did you kiss my momma?”

“I, uh, not exactly.”

Her little hand tangles with mine as she walks with me to the counter. “She needs kissed,” Hope says.

Shawna snorts as I hand her my card. “Add a tip, please.” I turn my attention to Hope. “I don’t think we should be talking about this without your mother.”

“But she needs someone to love her like she’s supposed to be.” She twirls as she talks to me.

“Is that so?”

Shawna clears her throat. “How much of a tip?”

“A thousand.” Shawna’s mouth drops as I press my finger to my lips, getting an agreeing nod in return.

“She likes you,” Hope presses me.

I squat down, looking into Hope’s eyes. “I like your mother, but we can only be friends.”

“Okay, but I don’t think that’s what y’all want.” She twists her mouth.

“Children.” Shawna shrugs, handing me my card with a pen to sign the receipt.

“Seriously.” I cut my eyes at Hope. “Are they all this precocious and adorable?”

She chuckles. “Nope, only when their momma is hot.”

A lady walks through the door, pauses, and looks me up and down before speaking to Shawna. “Is she ready?”

“Yes, go on back.” Shawna smiles, waving the lady on. “Okay, ladies, you know the drill. We’re leaving, you need to lock the door behind us.”

Faith walks toward us, taking Hope by the hand. “Good night, Shawna. Night, Lachlan.” They wave at us as we open the door.

“Good night, girls.” I step outside with Shawna, tugging at her arm once the door clicks. “What do they like to eat?”

Her mouth twists. “They’re eight and six. Pretty much anything.”

“How long will Maisyn be?”

“About two hours, but they’ll be okay. She’s always had to do this so she can work.” She looks away. “She’s a good mom.”

“I know that, Shawna.” I smile at her, hoping to reassure her. “Good night.”

“Good night.” She turns, only to spin back around. “I forgot your appointment.”

“Maisyn can text it to me tomorrow.” She waves as she walks to the bus stop. I knock on the door until the girls walk over. “I’ll be right back.” They smile and nod wildly.

I run to my SUV, hop in, and call the first person I know to ask questions about kids.

“Hey, handsome.”

“Lea, I need help.” Lea’s married to One.

“What’s up? Are you okay?” She sounds breathless.

“I am, but are you?”

“No, I’m pregnant.” She laughs. “What’s going on?”

I squeeze my eyes closed. “Please don’t tell, One.”

“Now, I’m curious.”

“I’m at Maisyn’s, and she’s still working.” I start the SUV and pull out into the traffic. “Her girls are here, and I’d like to buy them dinner. What should I get?”

“What does Malone have to do with this?” One’s real name is Malone, but I call him One.

“He… doesn’t want me involved with her.” I wince, knowing she’s going to ask more questions.
